This was the race I have been training for for the last 2 years! It was cancelled last year but luckily it went ahead this year. Normally the Long Course Championship for ITU is a different distance than Ironman, I guess just to differentiate themselves somehow. But I prefer the Ironman distance which is what it was this year! Every now and then they choose a venue of an existing race for the championship and run it at the classic full distance of 3800m (2.4mi) swim, 180km (112mi) bike and marathon run of 42.2km (26.2mi).  Hungarian friends, left to right:...

At this point for me it is all about the Dome. I will run my first ever 6-day event there between June 20-26 and I have high hopes for what I can do. I entered Alexander County because there are still a few things I would like to figure out for the Dome. My approach is that with 3 little kids who are only 6, 8 and 10, I can't really afford to take off for 6-day races (which means 10 days away) on a regular basis. So I'm trying to get the first one right and then be done and...

This year presented me with an unexpected but very pleasant problem: I accidentally discovered that I'm a natural at ultrarunning. The problem is that I love triathlon, I love the balance of the three sports and I don't want to give up cycling and swimming, my dreams of podiuming the ITU Worlds and going to Kona. The good news is, as it turns out, I don't need to! After my first 24h ultra race, which was only a bucket list item for me that I had originally planned to just tick off and move on, I got thinking. I ran the...

The easy and short answer is: because we are all so different and what works for one might not work for others. However, isn't it still strange that when you put in "how to run a 24h ultramarathon" or "best race strategy for 24h ultramarathon" nothing comes up except a few forum posts and a few tips here and there? No comprehensive strategy guide? If you google "best marathon race strategy" you will have pages and pages of tips, some advocating for negative splits, some for even splits, telling you to split it up into chunks, how to calculate the...

2020, 24h, Kilian Jornet, running, ultrarunning, World Record attempt, Yiannis Kouros -

It is a hot and popular topic these days and I do have an opinion which I would like to share with those interested. As everyone in the ultrarunning world knows, Kilian Jornet announced an attempt to break Yiannis Kouros' 24-hour world record of 303.5km (188 miles) on 27th November 2020. Below is my personal opinion about the phenomenon and because it is a personal blog, I can probably write things down that magazines and official publications can't. A few important points first to minimize misunderstanding around my post: - I'm not a world class ultrarunner. I have my success...
